What We Believe

"What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us." - A.W. Tozer

The following are the core beliefs of Calvary Baptist Church, grounded in the foundational truths of the Bible. All of our teaching and ministry are rooted in these biblical doctrines and flow naturally from them.

Core Beliefs

God

Revelation

There is one eternally existing God, revealed in three distinct persons: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit (Matthew 28:19; 2 Corinthians 13:14). He is the Creator of all things, both seen and unseen (Genesis 1:1; Colossians 1:16), and is worthy of all glory and praise (Revelation 4:11). God is perfect in love (1 John 4:8), power (Jeremiah 32:17), holiness (Isaiah 6:3), goodness (Psalm 119:68), knowledge (Psalm 139:4), wisdom (Romans 11:33), justice (Deuteronomy 32:4), and mercy (Exodus 34:6). Unchanging and eternal, He is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Malachi 3:6; Hebrews 13:8).

God has revealed Himself to us through His Son, Jesus Christ, who is the visible image of the invisible God (Colossians 1:15; Hebrews 1:1-3), through the Holy Scriptures, which are inspired by God and useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness (2 Timothy 3:16-17), and through all of creation itself, which declares the glory of God (Psalm 19:1; Romans 1:20).

Mankind

The Fall

Humans, both male and female, were created in God’s image for His glory (Genesis 1:26-27; Psalm 8:4-6). The first humans, Adam and Eve, were created without sin and appointed as caretakers of God’s creation (Genesis 1:28-30; Genesis 2:15).

When Adam and Eve chose to disobey God, they fell from the state in which they were created and became distorted images of God (Genesis 3:6-7; Romans 5:12). Their sin broke fellowship with God and brought a curse upon all of creation, affecting humanity and the world ever since (Genesis 3:16-19; Romans 8:20-22).

Salvation

The Church

Jesus Christ came to reconcile us with God. He lived a sinless life (2 Corinthians 5:21; Hebrews 4:15) and willingly died on the cross to pay the penalty for our sins (Romans 5:8; 1 Peter 2:24). God raised Him from the dead (Acts 2:24; Romans 6:9) and now offers eternal life as a free gift to all who place their faith in Christ as Lord and Savior (Ephesians 2:8-9; John 3:16). Salvation is found in Christ alone (John 14:6; Acts 4:12).

The Church is meant to be the visible body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:27; Ephesians 1:22-23), sent into the world to glorify God (Matthew 5:16; 1 Peter 2:9) and proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ (Matthew 28:19-20; Romans 10:14-15).

Resurrection

Jesus Christ will one day return to judge both the living and the dead (Acts 10:42; 2 Corinthians 5:10) and to establish the fullness of God’s kingdom on earth (Revelation 11:15; Matthew 25:31-34).
